Driverless Cars

Essay topics:

Driverless Cars

The article introduces the topic of driverless cars which use software to drive without human intervention. The article suggests that there are many advantages to using driverless cars over a conventional car. The lecturer however disagrees to the points made in the article.

Firstly, the article mentions about the safety of driverless cars. The article states that driverless cars which use computer programs and a variety of sensors to drive will be more accurate and less prone to making mistakes that lead to accidents. The lecturer however contends to this claim by stating that the computer programs running the cars would have been designed by humans and would have some kind of error. The lecturer also talks about an article in the newspaper where the driverless car mentioned in the passage had hit another car the previous month.

Secondly, it is mentioned in the article that driverless cars would be more efficient because they would be able to communicate with other cars on when to start and stop which would lead to less fuel consumption. The lecturer disagrees to this claim. The lecturer states that cars that are autonomous would mean that the people using them would not require a drivers license. This would mean that even children would be allowed to use cars. This would lead to more number of cars on the road and hence more pollution.

Lastly, the author of the article mentions that humans would have more time to do work or watch videos with the car doing the driving autonomously. The lecturer however mentions that people don’t view driving as a bane. Some people find driving relaxing and they do it while listening to the radio or music. It has become a welcome distraction. Making cars autonomous would mean that people would now have extra time that they would spend on work or may even waste it.

As you can see, the author and the lecturer hold different views on driverless cars.
