Both the reading and listening discuss the international policy of eco-certification of wood. The author believes that American Wood manufacturers will not favor this policy and provides three reasons for support. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that most of the American companies will seek certification. To begin with, the author argues that American customers nowadays are bombarded by a huge number of advertisements. As a result, they do not trust all the claims mentioned in the ads and will not purchase the eco-certified wood. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that American consumers differentiate between the claims made by the private company and the one claimed by independent consumer agencies and they will pay attention to the latter. Therefore, they will react favorably toward the eco-certified wood that has been certified by a good international agency and it will be trustworthy. Secondly, the writer suggests that the eco-certifications would cost the companies a lot of expenses, leading the prices of the eco-certified wood to be higher than the uncertified wood. The article mentions that the American consumers would significantly consider prices when making purchases and they will prefer to buy the cheaper uncertified wood. The lecturer, however, rebuts this claim by asserting that studies have shown that price is the deciding factor in the purchase process if the price difference between two products is much higher and more than 5%. In fact; this is not the case for eco- certified wood and the gap is less than 5 %. Hence, the consumers can consider other factors like the value of preserving the environment and will buy the eco-friendly wood. Finally, the writer posits that companies might consider this certification only if they are going to deal with international markets, but internally in the USA they will not go for it. The lecturer, in contrast, casts doubt on this by pointing out that American companies will be concerned about competition and if they slowly capture the environmental concerned customers, other foreign competitors will offer them eco- certified wood that is not sold domestically. Not only that but, they would lose their market share if they did not adopt this new policy.
