A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see one. In 1768 the animal became extintict.

The reading passage and the listening passage most certainly disagree on the topic just about how a marine mammal, sea cow became extinct in 1768. While the reading passage brings three theories to explain the extinction of these animals, the lecture casts doubt en each theory.
First of all, the reading passage mentions the over hunting by native as the first theory that cause the massive extinction of sea cows. On the other hand, the professor refutes this theory. He explains that sea cows were massive animal with more than ten tons of weight, which means that a couple of them were enough to feed a Siberian tribe. Siberian hunters did not hunted all of them, it is unlikely.
In addition, the article mentions that disturbances on the ecosystem causes a declined in their main source of food, a sea plant named, Kelt. However, the professor claims that ecosystems disturbances could cause decline in other species population. He points out the example of whales, to indicate that the ecosystem disturbance was not as broad as the article mentions. There is no evidence of any decline in whale population in that time for food shortening.
Finally, the reading passage states that hunting for Europeans fur trades was another factor that affected sea cows extinction. The professor refutes this argument, he explains that when Europeans came to the Island the sea cows population was quite small almost a hundred years before Europeans arrive to the Island. Whatever could caused the extinct should be consider the main factor but not the European traders because they were the last to arrived the Island.
