Essay topics:

many people dream of owning their own business but are afraid to take the risks. Instead of starting a new business, however, one can buy a franchise.

The reading and the lecture are both about the advantages and disadvantages of buying a franchise over starting an independent business. While the author of the article puts forth three reasons why buying a franchise is better, the lecturer disputes his arguments. Her position is that buying a franchise can be more harmful than starting your own business.
The article states that buying a franchise is advantageous because it helps find reliable suppliers for goods and services easily. The author contends that since franchise companies already have reliable suppliers, serious losses can be prevented. However, the lecturer contradicts this argument and states that franchise companies force franchise owners to buy very specific goods and services from their suppliers by stating it in their contracts. She goes on to say that, these goods are overpriced and if the franchise owners venture into the market to find the same goods, they might get them at lower prices.
Secondly, the author asserts that franchise owners save money in advertising the products. He adds that since the goods and services are already popular and the advertising costs are borne by the franchise company, the franchise owners have an advantage. The lecturer, however, challenges this specific argument and states that the franchise owners actually get less benefit when advertising costs are borne by the franchise company. She contends that the franchise owners have to pay 6% of the sum total of their sales to the company in return for the company to advertise the products. But the company is advertising its brand name and products not the franchise. Additionally, there may be multiple franchises of the same company and this is not benefitting the individual franchise owner.
Finally, the author’s stand is that buying a franchise provides more security. He adds that the fail rate of new businesses in the first four years is more than the fail rate of franchises. The lecturer, in contrast, states that even if buying a franchise is less risky than starting a new business, there is another option that is more secure. People can buy a pre-existing independent business from previous owners. She adds that owning a pre-existing business has a 2x chance of being successful than owning a franchise.
