pikas

The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in whether global warming is hostile to the survival of American pikas. To begin with, the reading says that pikas die due to overheating because they are thick-furred animals. However, the listening argues that pikas can stay underground when the temperature is too high. When pikas feel threaten by the rising temperature, they will find places to refuge such as some shade and stones. I other words, the rising of temperature will not cause any harm to pikas because they will find a place to hide.

Secondly, the reading indicates that since pikas need to find and store food during the summer, high temperature can kill them while they are active. Whereas, the listening suggests that this is not likely to be true. Pikas will eat less if the temperature is rising. They will save the food they eat in the summer for them to eat during the winter. Therefore, they will not need to spend lots of energy and die during the hot summer. As a result, since pikas will be less active while the temperature is rising, they will not be easily kill during the hot summer.

Lastly, the reading asserts that global warming will cause the decrease of snowpack, and if there are no snowpack, pikas will die of freezing high in the mountain. Likewise, the listening implies that when the snow melt faster, it means that the winter will be shorter. Therefore, pikas can find fresh food earlier and this can increase the reproducing rate of their young. To say it differently, by receive fresh food earlier can pikas reproduce their next generation.
