Essay topics:

A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself.

While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Literature encourages us to exercise our imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. So by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits.

Unfortunately, missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. What are people reading instead? Consider the prevalence of self-help books on lists of best sellers. These are usually superficial poorly written, and intellectually undemanding. Additionally, instead of sitting down with a challenging novel, many persons are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page. Clearly, diverting time previously spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general.

The trend of reading less literature is all the more regrettable because it is taking place during a period when good literature is being written. There are many talented writers today, but they lack an audience. This fact is bound to lead publishers to invest less in literature and so support fewer serious writers. Thus, the writing as well as the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers.

The reading and the lecture is about the current treand of decline in reading literature and its effect. While the passage tries to establish the negative consequences of this trend of decline in reading literature, the lecture argues against the points presented in the writing.

Firstly, the author says that by the decline in reading literature, people are missing out the intellectual stimulation that literature provides. The lecturer, however, rebuts this point by saying that there are many science and other books from different disciplines that are also very stimulating for the readers. So, it is not right to say that just because someone not reading a literature book means he is not reading a good book.

Secondly, the passage indicates that people reading less books is a sign of lowering the level of culture as they are choosing many trivial forms of entertainment instead. The lecturer rebuts this point by stating that books are not the only form of culture and reading less books not necessarily means that the culture is in decline. In addition, she pointed out at the different non-literature cultural components like movies, songs, etc. In her opinion some of this non-literature form of culture communicates better with the current generation than the literature. So, she concluded that the culture has changed rather than it has declined.

Finally, the passage accused the readers for the lack of support of the publishers behind the serious writers due to lack of audiences. But the lecturer disagrees with the notion. In her opinion, though it is true that the publishers are giving less support to the writers, it is also true that many writrers write in a way that are difficult to understand which, in turn, discourages readers. And people from previous generation are not much interested in readingt the literature from this generation.
