Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific solutions presented in the reading passage.

The reading passage talks about three approaches to prevent the decline of Torreya trees. The lecturer suggests that the approaches mentioned in the passage will not provide satisfactory solutions for various reasons.

To begin with, the reading passage cites the first approach of reestablishing Torreya in the same cooler and wetter microclimate of Northern Florida where it once thrived for thousands of years. The professor disagrees with this and says that the microclimate is getting affected by the changing climate of the larger area of that region which is turning dry due to global warming. Thus, the microclimate is no longer as cool and wet as it was before and is becoming dry. Hence, it won’t be to support Torreya’s growth.

Furthermore, the passage mentions the second option that is moving Torreya to a different location far from its microclimate in Florida. This is because some scientists believe that Torreya has been grown successfully in the further north in the past. Thus, it can be relocated with the help of assisted migration to the north where it can thrive. Again, the professor disagrees and gives the example of the black locust tree which was relocated to the north. The locust tree grew and spread so much in the north that it killed other important plants species of that area which were already on the verge of extinction. Thus, it would be unwise to relocate Torreya to the north.

Lastly, the third approach mentioned in the reading passage talks about preserving Torreyas in research centers where it will be easier for scientists to protect and conduct research on them, ensuring their long time survival. However, the professor says that this approach will not be fruitful because Torreya species in the labs won’t be able to resist diseases and will die soon. This is because disease resistance requires a large and genetically diverse population that can only be seen in the wild. Besides, the research centers won’t have enough space to grow large Torreya populations.

Thus, the lecturer does not think that the approaches suggested by the reading passage will be effective in preventing Torreya’s decline.
