The lecture mainly contradicts the author's arguments stating that salvage logging, after natural disasters, benefits society. The professor doesn't believe that the damaged wood removal would profit the forest, or favor the economy.

The reading states that the damaged wood would take several years to decompose, meanwhile new trees can not grow. The professor, however, assesses this point by stating that decomposition profits the soil and is not as harmful to new trees' growing procedure as the passage indicates. The professor provides an explanation about the forest with a lack of materials for new trees as the result of rapid removal; this plainly shows that the damaged trees can actually benefit the forest.

According to the article, dead trees are a new habitant of harmful insects. In the contract, the professor says that harmful insects are not the only new inhabitants of dead trees; in fact, many birds and other useful insects live there, as well. She concedes that bark beetles_a harmful insect_lives in damaged trees, but this species used to live in other forests for 100 years without any problem.

The author wraps his argument positioning that salvage logging helps the economy by providing new jobs. The professor says that this claim is questionable; this is because the dead trees are transported by expensive vehicles, such as helicopters, which can not be maintained easily.

The professor claims that most of the new jobs are temporary, and outsiders take the job when compared to locals.

To sum up, both the professor and the author hold conflicting ideas about salvage logging. They will have a hard time finding common ground about the issue.
