TPO-20 - Integrated Writing Task
The article states that the “let it burn” policy caused much damage in forest fires in Yellowstone in 1988 and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that fire is a natural process in the ecological cycle and is creative, not destructive, and she refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading posits that Yellowstone fires damaged trees and vegetation of the park tremendously. The professor refutes this point by stating that by burning dominant trees and plants, new plants colonized the park, and the diversity of plants was increased. She explains that the plants which were in shad of other plants before found the opportunity to grow. Also, the seeds germinated more because of the much more heat caused by fires.
Second, the article claims that animal life was harmed from fires; large animals such as deer and elk escape the fire. However, the professor contends that small plants that dominated the park provided an opportunity for small animals like rabbits and hares to feed more. Therefore, the population of these animals grew.
Third, the reading avers that the fires reduce the tourist attraction of the park, which had a negative impact on the local economy. The lecture opposes this point by saying that it would be a problem if the fire would occur each year. Since it did not happen after that, tourism came back to the park very soon.
