The professor completely refutes the reading passage. The speaker uses three points to indicate that electronic medical records are not reliable substitutes for paper-based records.
First, it is true that electronic medical record take almost no space to restore and paper records require a big storage to keep the files in which costs a lot of money, but most of the doctors would not throw out the paper records. This is because they would keep it as a back up or because of the patients signatures that they might need them in the future. For this reason, using electronic records would not minimize the cost of storage and save money as the article claims.
Second, although electronic records can reduce the errors due to poor hand writing and might be beneficial for patent sake, this is not going to happen in doctors offices. This is because doctors write the diagnosis and drug prescription by their hand and then office staffs enter the information into the system. In this way, electronic record would not be accurate because the information are not entered by the doctors.
Finally, even though access to patients information is much easier with electronic records than paper records, researchers would not gather the information right away. The reason behind that is the law in the United States prevents the access to patient information without the patients approval. So, researchers need to do a lot of paper work and go on long process to get these premision and be able to use patient information. This fact shows that using electronic records in research is much harder for researches than paper records.
