In the reading, the author claims that humpback whales use the stars to navigate for migrating long distances by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the reasons questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates it and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that humpback whales have the well-developed cognitive ability to use stars for navigation. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no real connection between brains complexity and star navigation. the lecture presents an example to corroborate its idea. Duck, a bird, use stars to navigate yet it is not a highly intelligent animal. Ducks have an instinct feature with which they born and it helps them to use stars for orientation.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that humpback whales migrate in straight lines and those animals who are traveling, in the same way, oreint themselves by external objects. Owing to lack of landmark in oceans, whales may use stars as external signs. That being said, the lecturer disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that humpback whales have a biomagnetic in their organ in their brain in order to be sensitive about the magnetics. Hence, this species employs magnetic field rather than stars in the sky for orientation.
Finally, the author draws attention to spy-hopping which is a strange behavior that animals move bring their head above the water to sea sky as the last point for supporting the claim. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that having this behavior does not necessarily mean that they look at the stars. For instance, sharks act in the same way, nevertheless, they do not migrate or look the stars. Sharks only do spy-hopping to see their preys. So, it is a pure speculation that there is a correlation between spy-hopping and navigation by stars.
