The reading and the lecture are both about growing a new type of broccoli on the east coast of the US and its benefits. Whereas the author claims that planting a new type of broccoli that is compatible with east side hot summer will be beneficial and lists out three reasons for support, the lecturer refutes each of the author's reasons and believes that it will not be successful or beneficial.
First, the author claims that growing broccoli locally in the east part can reduce the cost of transportation from western fields; therefore, the final price for consumers will be lower. However, the lecturer disputes this idea. She mentions that it is true that transportation costs will decrease but the final product will not be cheaper because new broccoli, enduring eastern hot summers, yield less than western type. Furthermore, farmers harvest less product per hectare and it results in higher prices that offset the advantage of cheaper transportation.
Second, the passage argues that people prefer consuming this new product to other genetically modified species. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this argument. She states that people stay suspicious as previous because they are aware that the same company that, performs genetic modification, produces this type of broccoli. In other words, the consumers do not trust any of the company's projects and similarily, they will reject this one.
Third, the author states that fresh vegetables which are provided locally will be more beneficial and nutrient. On the contrary, the lecturer rejects this statement by saying that there are other vegetables in place which have the same nutrition and vitamins. She mentions the Kale as an example that besides the health benefits can also grow in fall and winter. In addition, she remarks that it is better to educate people to consume local fresh products compatible with the weather condition.
