TPO50

The professor revises the idea presented in the passage that proposes three possible problems that man would face while trying to travel to Mars and refutes each of the points made in the reading.

First of all, the author states that a trip to Mars and back will take two years and the vessels do not have enough capacity to board all the food, water and oxygen required for two years. On the other hand, the professor argues against this view by pointing out that by the advent of hydroponics - a special type of planting that helps to grow plants in water rather than soil- these problems could easily be solved. Besides, the hydroponics system recycles the wastewater, and plants use carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, too. Hence, the first argument is not convincing.

Secondly, the professor's opinion contradicts the second point of the text that zero-gravity can cause a lot of damage to the muscle mass and bone density of the astronauts. She believes that astronauts have already launched on some space stations for several times. Thus, they found some useful techniques to maintain their health. For instance, they do regular exercise to save their muscle mass or take some vitamins and calcium to make up their bone density. Accordingly, the second explanation has some deficiencies regarding the main point of the passage.

Finally, the reading material asserts that solar radiation of the outer space is extremely harmful while there is no shield to protect astronauts. The professor opposes this idea by clarifying that space radiation is not dangerous all the time. Therefore, the spacecraft can be equipped with some devices that can monitor solar radiation and detect the dangerous rays. Furthermore, the vessels can have some shielded parts. So, in case of harmful radiation, the astronauts can use these shielded areas until the danger passes. Thus, the third reason does not hold due to the lack of compelling evidence.
