In this set of material, the writer strongly postulates that salinity of The Salton Sea is upbringing forthcoming problems which result in the destruction of the bird and fish population and endorse its idea by presenting three resolution. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that the solution provided in the reading are unpractical and dubious, and gainsays each argument in the reading.
First and foremost, the writer begins by asserting that the removal of saltwater from the lake by desalination would be helpful. The speaker on the listening refutes this comment by insisting that the desalination process though reduce salinity, but it will result in serious other problems. To be more specific, as a result of desalination, certain salt and toxic chemicals are deposited and left behind. He exemplifies that by selenium. He explains that the remaining debris of Selenium could result in serious health problems when it will be dispersed by wind.
Furthermore, the lecturer points out that for dilution solution government needs to construct canals or pipelines, and the government has not enough resources to build that pipeline. In other words, the nearest shoreline for this process is 100km away. Therefore, it could be a financial burden on the government. These claims clearly refute the writer's implication that dilution of the Salton sea with lake water by building pipelines or canals solve the issue.
Lastly, the writer wraps up the arguments by declaring that partitioning the lake into separate sections( high and low salinity)would reduce the salinity. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes an issue with that by contending that the lake is geographically located in such an area where geological activities take place. He exemplifies this by the earthquake; that when it will happen, the barrier inside the sections of the lake will break, and water will be uniform again. Because high salinity water will be added to low salinity water, and hence this solution will not work too.
