“Our declining environment may bring the people of the world together as no politician, philosopher,
or war ever could. Environmental problems are global in scope and respect no nation’s boundaries.
Therefore, people are faced with the choice of unity and cooperation on the one hand or disunity and
a common tragedy on the other.”
While environment issues are common factors across the globe, there are many very perspectives on the necessity and prioritization of addressing these issues. Additionally, in the argument, the key roles other events and people have had in uniting the role have been glossed over. Because of the significant role of many events and public figures and the factions present within the topic of environmental issues, the declining environment may not be the most uniting global force we have encountered yet.
Unfortunately, there are many divisions on the necessity of action on various environmental issues. For example, the hotly debated issue of global warming has formed strong factions across the globe. Many individuals believe that global warming is occurring due to human activities and should be counteracted. However, others believe that global warming is occurring at a natural rate, unaffected by human activity, and thus, should not be counteracted. Still other groups deny that global warming is occurring. In American politics, this is a hotly debated issue that influences voting patterns and has been taken up as significant issues by the major political parties. This is just one example of how polarized and divided environmental issues are in today’s society. Because of these differing opinions on environmental issues, the declining environment will not be the most uniting global event thus far.
While environmental issues may not be globally uniting due to the strong divisions within the issues, many other events and public figures have created strong global unions. Events in history such as the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, marking the end of an era of oppression and division, had a globally uniting effect. Additionally, important leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ghandi, had philosophies on peaceful resistance of racism and oppression that affected and united the world in combating racism, oppression, and other issues peacefully. Events or leaders such as these had strongly uniting effects across the world that may outweigh the global union created by environmental issues.
Therefore, due to the division created over environmental issues and the significant uniting effect other events or leaders have had globally, the declining environment across the world will likely not bring the world to an previously unseen level of cooperation and unity.
