Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Student and teachers are the primal component of every educational institution. The debate on whether or not discussions between them has an impact on the learning ambiance is a very controversial one. Some argue that classroom discussion fosters a positive learning environment, while others disagree. Nowadays, many are adamant that a myriad of elements should be considered in order to examine the positive and negative facets of this issue. From my vantage point, I prefer lectures with no discussions and will be expounding on my stance in the subsequent paragraphs.

The first exquisite point to be mentioned is that discussions may be a diversion from the usual course track. Every professor has a certain class plan which h/she needs to execute in order to finish the course load in time. However, discussions may cause awry to that plan and be a distraction for everyone. A vivid example which can be given to shed light on this subject is one of my own experience. The sociology lectures of my college primarily consisted of discussions in the class. Although this may have been a wise choice for a social science class, our professor was never able to finish lectures on time. The main reason behind this was the discussions usually moved beyond the course topic and were not relevant to the study. As a result, this had a huge impact on our grade and performance.

Secondly, another reason which deserves some words to say is that reserved, shy students never benefit from class discussions. It'll not be an exaggeration to say that class powwow are usually dominated by the more forthcoming students. Eventually, they become the one who get most of the outputs from these lectures and this is not fair to other students. On the other hand, a lecture where the professor has sole control never discriminates among the students. This lectures are on track, they are repleted with the subject contents and every student who puts in his/her concentration can easily benefit from them.

Lastly, although the aforementioned points were the first one which cross the mind at first glance, they are by no means the only reason available. In fact there is another subtle point which must be borne in mind. Lectures having no discussions does not means that students do not have the liberty of clearing their doubts and talking their professors. Every professors allocate either some time at the end of lectures or some time in their office hours to answer the queries of the students. For instance, my ecology professors does not tolerate any kind of discussions during his lectures. He does not like anybody interrupting the general flow of his lectures. This is a very good rule since sometimes distractions may inadvertently lead to missing out of some important topics. However, at the end of every lecture he allocates ten minutes in order to solve our dilemmas. All of this is a very good arrangement for both us and our professor.

To wrap it up, contemplating all foresaid reasons, one can soon realize how lectures forbidding discussions have a better impact on the class environment and overall student performance.
