higher taxes on unhealthy behaviors

Essay topics:

higher taxes on unhealthy behaviors

The text discusses the increase of taxes on unhealthy foods and explains how it can help the whole society at the end. On the other hand, the Professor goes against stated points and by providing some contradictory information, explains why she believes all stated points are challenging.

First, the author states that higher taxes on the unhealthy foods encourage people to buy and use them less. It also mentions that as a result of increase in the tobacco' taxes, people used them less, and this can happen for unhealthy foods as well. In contrast, the professor mentions that we cannot assure that higher taxes on unhealthy foods lead people to follow healthy diets. She continues that by increase in the taxes of these foods, people buy cheaper foods with lower quality which have even more negative effects on their health.

Second, the text claims that higher taxes on unhealthy behaviors are fair. As an explanation, it states that government by obtaining more money from increased taxes can cover medical cost, and it can benefit the society. On the other hand, the professor explains that this kind of income is really arguable among people. She refutes this point the second point made by author, and states that higher prices on unhealthy foods put more pressure on the lower class of the society. She continues that government should pay attention to the income of different types of people and In this way, she explains why she disagree with the author.

Third, as the text, high taxes of cigarettes can strengthen government's revenue. It also include that government by having higher income, can do projects which all the people can benefit of it. The professor goes against this claim and explains that this income can have its own down sides. We can also hear from her that this high income can make the government depend on it. She also mentions that some times, because the government do not want to lose this income, may not take proper actions against unhealthy habits like smoking in open and public areas like parks.
