humpback whales

Essay topics:

humpback whales

The reading claims that it is probable that humpback whales use stars, like early human sailors, to navigate their way and migrate long distances, and the reading provides some evidence for this conviction. The lecturer, on the other hand, finds all the ideas mentioned by the reading dubious and provides some rebuttals to refute them all.

The author argues that humpback whales are of the most intelligent animals and their intelligence and cognitive ability allow them to use and comprehend complex navigation systems like the night sky. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no real connection between intelligence and animals capability of navigating. For example, docks use the night sky for navigation too, but they have average cognitive ability among animals. It seems, she argues, that the animals' navigation systems are related to the instinct they were born with, not connected to their intelligence.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that humpback whales migrate in a straight line, so there is some external objects or forces that make them migrate in a straight direction for long distances and the night sky is that external sign which helps them maintain their direction over long paths. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that there is a different explanation for whales navigating in a straight line. He goes on stating that humpback whales have some organ which helps them to feel earth magnetic field, acts as an external force and makes them navigate in a straight line since some external force is exerted on them.

Finally, the reading asserts that unlike other animals, these whales have an unusual behavior called spy-hopping, which is when their head is above water, they look upward for some noticeable time. one explanation for their strange behavior is that they are looking at the stars to find their migration path. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that other animals, like sharps, exhibit this strange behavior too. sharps use this behavior to find their prays and their path to hunt them, and this strange behavior is used during both day and night. As a result, this behavior isn't related to navigation, and this speculation is rejected too.
