Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading passage. You have 20 minutes to type your response.

The reading passage states that the settlers relocated to the Island of Croatoa, and gives three reasons of support. However, the lecturer claims that none of the theories about the disappearance can be proven, and attacks each of the claims made by the author.
First, the reading posits that the carved word “Croatoa” onto a piece of wood is proof of the relocation. However, the professor thinks that this point doesn’t make sense. She explains that the Governor commanded the settlers to go inside the country if they face any harsh conditions or lack of food. It is more likely that they went there rather than going to the Island which in the opposite direction.
, so the colony wouldn’t oppose their governor for a less advantageous location.
Second, the author states that the English artifacts which have been found on Croatoa Island support his idea. Again, the professor rebuts this point by explaining that this in no way a proof = proves nothing. She says that settlers used to exchange goods with Corotan (trade their belongings for food and other items) in order to get food in the harsh conditions. The ring mentioned in the article, for example, might be on the island due to this kind of trade rather than the relocation.
Third, the reading claims that the inhabitants possessed European characteristics due to the relocation. On the contrary, the lecturer opposes this idea. She explains that after 1587 a lot of group of settlers came to this area. The search parties came after more than 100 years, so anyone of the other settlers groups may affect the characteristics of Corotan people.
