salinity in a lake

Essay topics:

salinity in a lake

The Salton lake in California is at serious risk since its salinity is increasing at a rapid pace. The passage and lecture both discuss methods that can be used to reduce the lake's salinity and protect its fishes and birds from extinction. The essay introduces three ways to decrease salinity levels. However, the lecturer disputes these suggestions. His conviction is that these methods are not practical solutions.

Firstly, one way to reduce the lake's salinity is by directly removing salt from its water with the help of the desalination process made easy by specific facilities. The author mentions that these structures can evaporate water, eliminate salt from it, and return steam water in its original form to the lake. The lecturer challenges this argument. She claims that although this approach can reduce salinity levels, it poses serious health risks for people. She mentions that by evaporating water in the salinity system, other harmful solid materials like selenium dissolve in the water. These kinds of toxic chemicals can spread in the air by wind and enter people's breath.

Secondly, the author suggests that combining ocean water with the lake's can increase the amount of salt dissolved in the water. It is stated in the article that ocean water has twenty percent less salt content compared to lake water. The lecturer, however, asserts that adding ocean water to the lake requires the construction of massive pipelines. She goes on to say that pipeline infrastructure is very expensive to build since it should be built over an extensively long distance.

Finally, the author speculates that dividing the lake into several sections can remedy the problem of the lake's sanity. He contends that in this way, salinity can be controlled in some areas. By increasing salinity in some minor areas, the majority of the lake can benefit from low salinity. Adding to that, freshwater also can be introduced in these low salinity areas. In contrast, the lecture's stance is that this method can not be considered as a long-term solution since walls experience frequent geological activities such as earthquakes. This phenomenon is a severe threat to walls. As she points out, when walls collapse on major earthquakes, waters will eventually merge again.
