The reading and the lecture are both about great houses which are huge stone buildings in New Mexico. The author of the reading believes that those houses were used for some purposes, because of some evidence. The lecturer casts doubt on claims made in the article. He thinks that all those theories about exploration of great houses are able to be disproved.
First of all, the author points out that Chaco buildings were used for residential purposes. He states that there were a lot of other buildings which were similar to the Chaco. Moreover, there could live hundreds of people. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that there were a small number of fireplaces which could be used by families of people and not enough rooms for people`s dwelling, so this evidence is false.
Secondly, the author contends that those houses were storage place for grain maize. Furthermore, this plant could be kept for a long time, so the Chaco was extremely appropriate for this. The lecture rebuts this argument. He suggests that there were no traces of grain maize or any remains of containers. This theory also contradicts with strong facts.
Finally, the author states that great houses were ceremonial centers, because there are a lot of other places, for example Pueblo Alto, which supported all traditions of Native American culture. In addition, one of those customs was breaking pots after ceremonial lunch, so in Chaco buildings were found a large number of pot`s remains. The lecturer on the other hand posits that all those pots were no more than a litter after workers, because there were some other build materials.
In conclusion, I would like to say that there are a lot of theories explain purposes of great houses, but all those theories are able to be unproved.
