TPO 28

The reading and listening passages both deal with the same thing that Peary did reach the North Pole or not. The reading passage believes the Peary's claim, and gives three reasons. However, the professor disagrees with that, and challenges the reasons mentioned in the reading passage.

First, although the author says that the conclusion of the investigation from a committee proves the Peary's claim, the professor does not think it is trustworthy. This is mainly because the leader in National Geographic Society is the close friend of Peary, and the group donated money to Peary's exploration. In other words, the investigation of that committee is not completely objective. Moreover, the investigation took only 2 days, it is impossible to investigate carefully. Thus, the conclusion of the investigation cannot be consider as the solid evidence.

Second, the author states it is possible to do it, according to a recent expedition less than 37 days. Nonetheless, the professor claims that the weather condition in the recent exploration was good, which was beneficial to the expedition. Besides, Avery's food was transported by airplane, which is also different from Peary's condition. Therefore, Avery's expedition cannot prove the possibility of Peary's expedition. Third, even though the author thinks the photographs can give a support, the professor disagrees with is. This is because, the condition of the photo is not good, which have already fade and blurred, so it is impossible to calculate the sun's position precisely. Consequently, this photo cannot prove Peary's claim.

In conclusion, the professor casts doubt on the point and reasons in the reading passage, and expresses doubts that Peary reached the North Pole.
