TPO 37 Integrated essay

The reading and the lecture are both discuss about the invention called turtle excluder device that is used in order to decline turtle death in nets. The reading states three disadvantages of using the TED; nevertheless, the lecture doubts about what the reading said.

Firstly, the reading mentioned that the shrimper’s argument that the turtles are rarely get trapped, therefore if the their shrimp boat all equipped with the TED, it might be another heavy cost for them, what’s more the lecture says that if those boats indeed equipped with the TED, it might cause even more negative effects on turtle preservation also on shrimp industry.

Secondly, the reading claims that applying alternative methods of protecting sea turtles that may be more effective than using TEDs, that is to limit the time that shrimp boats keep their nets underwater. On the other hand, the lecture argues that applying alternative ideas is just a way that only appears in the theories, for instance it is impossible for governments to monitor all thousands of shrimp boats at the same time, and therefore it is much easier and convenient for governments to make sure that every boats use the TEDs before cruising than using alternative methods.

Lastly, the reading illustrates that TEDs are not effective for those larger species of endangered sea turtles, because there are some certain species can grow pretty large that TEDs can’t provide therefore unable to catch it. Nonetheless the lecture opposes that indeed the size of the TEDs is too small for some large species, on the flip side, in some areas there are still needed, and the producer can modify the TED without changing its function.
