TPO 37 Integrated writing
The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about whether using a turtle excluder device, TED, is an effective way for protection of turtle species. In the text, the author claims that these devices are not practical for few reasons. The lecturer challenges all the arguments mentioned in the reading passage, and she believes none of them is logical.
Firstly, the author states that the number of turtle which get trapped by shrimp fishers are very low. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although every fishing boat catches about one turtle every month, the number of boats in area are very high. By considering this issue, the numerous turtle will catch every years. Because turtle's population are very low, using TED is very viable.
Moreover, the author asserts that they are some alternative methods which should be used rather than using TED. Besides, these methods can shorten the time as well. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this idea by pointing out that the methods which mentioned in the reading are good way theoretically, but they are not usable in real situation. Furthermore, she says that these devices do not implement in all boats. Thus, the methods which mentioned in the passage is impossible in real experiment.
Eventually, the author holds the opinion that TEDs are not efficacious method for larger species of endangered sea turtles. The lecturer, however, dismisses this idea by asserting that although the TED is very small device, it can be easily modified for using for larger species. Additionally, she says that all the turtle which are colonized in this area are small so TEDs could be useful.
