TPO 38

The topic of both the passage and the lecture is about a microscopic fungus named Phytophthora, which has been found in the western united states and has made significant damages for the oak trees. The reading mentions three possible ways regarding protecting forests from the dangers of this fungus. The lecture, however, refutes all these methods successively, states her idea about each one of them.

First, the author asserts that one method for this protection is to stop spreading Phytophthora through the forest. The writer claims that since many of this kind of fungus can be observed along hiking or biking trails, it would be possible to avoid their spreading by encouraging hikers to wash their shoes or to ask them install new bike scrubbers. On the other hand, the professor contradicts this idea, says although it seems effective, a considerable impact would not be excepted by using this method. Hence, she refuses this method categorically.

Secondly, the reading suggests that by using a kind of chemical (Fungicidal), oak trees could be [rotected from the mentioned danger. On the contrary, the professor denies this theory like the previous one, claims that due to the large number of trees in forest, it needs both a lot of money and time to implement this method on the whole trees in the forest. As a result, in her opinion, this method would not be possible.

Finally, the writer points out that there is another method for protecting the trees titled "clear-cutting," in which by cutting and burning diseased oaks and seemingly healthy vegetarian surrounding the oaks as well, the other trees could be suffered from being dirty injured by Phytophthora. The professor makes a rebuttal to this idea. She believes that a wide range of vegetarian covering around oak trees are scarce, and cutting and burning this cover would lead to their extinction, and their regeneration would take a long time to happen again.
