In the reading, the author claims that storing patients's medical records in electronic databases is far beeter than keeping them in paper-based format by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all reasons questionable and implausibe, the lecturer repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that using electronic databases may lead to cost reduction by eliminating demands for a significant amount of storage space, copying, faxing or transporting paper records. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that use of electronic record in unlikely to reduce the cost significantly. Owing to the fact that by using electrical forms the signatures of the patients below the forms are still required , besides the use of electronic forms papers should be used too.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that electronic medical records makes errors prevented since legible computer fonts and standardization of forms minimize the possibility of human error. That being said, the lecturer disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that even doctors use electronical records they still take notes and write prescription. If their handwriting is illegible or the assistant staffs cannot interpret them correctly, it will cause errors which may have terrible implications for patients.
Finally, the author draws attention to aiding medical research by easily access to a plethora electronic documents as the last advantage of electronic databases. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that access to all forms and patients' documents is subject to privacy laws. If researchers want to collect data from these resources, they should do complex procedures and also get permission from the patients who are unlikely to give it.
