The lecture and the article are both about genetic modification that is now being use to improve trees. The author feels that genetically modified trees in a large scale bring a number of benefits and provide three possible reasons. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the article. He believes that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the article states that genetically modified trees are more resistant to the bad conditions like petst and unconvenient weather condition. The specific argument is challenged by the article. He claims that when natural plants are faced with unfavorable condition some of them are more resistant and survive in these conditions. Otherewise, genetically changed plant are uniform; if they face with bad situations, they will die as a whole.
secondly, the writer mentions that modified trees can bring a bunch of economic benefits because they produce more fruits. The lecture, however, rebuts this by mentioning that farmers should pay for seeds every time that they want to cultivate. Additionally, when they harvest farmers ought to pay money to company.
Last but not least, the author posits that modified plants can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. On the other hand, the demand for wood can be satisfied by artifascial woods instead of cuting valuable trees in order to logging. In contrast, the lecture position is that these trees not only have no benefit for natural trees but also they compete with them in the nature. Modified plants are cultivate among natural trees and can limited the source of nutritins, water, and sun light. Therefore, they are strongly harmful for wild trees.
