The author in the reading passage holds that humpback whales are navigated by starts to migrate long distances, which the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite opinion.

To begin with, the author claims that humpback whales are more intelligent than most other animals, so they have the cognitive ability to use stars for orientation. However, the lecturer refutes that no specific connection has been verified between intelligence and the cognition of night sky. For example, some birds such as ducks are also able to use star navigation while their intelligence and cognition ability are just at an average level. Thus, it is not likely that a high degree of cognition ability can directly lead to the capability of astronavigation.

Moreover, the author believes that only the starts can provide direction information for humpback whales to move in a straight line for long distances because they are the only external objects in the ocean. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it can be the earth magnetic field that allows them to maintain such movement. The bio-magnitude component inside their bodies makes those whales sensitive to the magnetic field of the earth, which helps them to stay on a straight track during migration.

Finally, the author puts forward that the spy-hopping, an unusual behavior of humpback whales looking upward, indicates that the navigating information comes from the stars. Instead, the lecturer retorts that this behavior is not of such rarity. Actually, other animals such as sharks exhibit the same spy-hopping pattern to hunt food as they do not migrate. Besides, the fact that spy-hopping occurs mostly in the daytime when there are no stars further diminishes the explanation of seeking stars.
