Wild tuna, a species of large ocean fish, have decreased in number because of overfishing Recently, attempts have been made to farm tuna by feeding the fish in ocean cages until they become large enough for sale. However, tuna farming has faced several problems and criticisms.
First, female tuna do not lay eggs in captivity, so tuna farmers must capture large quantities of young wild tuna to stock their farms, further reducing wild tuna populations. These young tuna are caged and fed until they are large enough to be sold. Since the captured females in tuna farms cannot lay eggs to replace the tuna that are sold, tuna farmers continue to catch young wild tuna to keep their farms going and so worsen the decline in wild tuna populations.
Second, tuna raised on farms are very expensive because they depend on a costly, high-protein food derived from other fish. Tuna feed almost exclusively on small fish, which supply them with the proteins and nutrients they require. A single tuna can grow more than four meters long, weigh close to 700 kilograms, and eat 70 kilograms of food a day! It is unlikely that tuna farms can remain profitable while supplying so much expensive food for the tuna.
Third tuna confined to ocean cages are likely to become infested with parasites, organisms that feed on and weaken the animal they attach to. Tuna farmers off the coast of southern Australia have had problems with infestations of blood flukes, a type of parasite that lives within the blood vessels and heart of infected fish. Parasite infestations weaken tuna, slow their growth, and can even cause death, usually by making them susceptible to other diseases. Tuna farms in southern Australia have had 10 percent of their tuna die before they could be sold.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate about if the tune farming can be made beneficial or not. More specifically, in regards to the reading text, the writer puts forth his idea that now-a-days tuna farming are facing lots of problems. In the listening, the lecturer is quick to point out that there some significant flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the lecturer believes that according to the recent research, it has been observed that those concerns mentioned in the reading, can be easily overcome, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
To begin with, the writer claims that as the female tuna are not capable of laying eggs in large amount, the tuna farmers need to capture large quantities of the young tuna to ensure that they can sell these tuna when they become sufficiently large enough for selling them out, to keep their farms going. Therefore, this further causes a decline in tuna population. In the listening, the lecturer stand in firm opposition to this claim. He challenges this argument by mentioning that researchers has found that by injecting hormones into the body of female animal lead to better fertility. Moreover, he also mentions that this method also does not cause harm to the female tunas as well as the consumers.
Secondly, the author posits that raising tuna on farms are very expensive as tuna fishes need to feed costly, high-protein fishes as their food. In the listening, the lecturer rebuts this by asserting that it is not necessary that tuna fishes must be fed high protein fishes. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that, the same protein can be generated from the plants following more inexpensive process. Therefore, this ensures that tuna farms can remain profitable along with supplying the high-protein to the tuna fishes.
Finally, the author states that tuna fishes are vulnerable to parasite infestation as it has been found the in the coast of southern Australia that tuna fish with infestation of blood flukes, which slowed down the growth of the tuna fishes. Not surprisingly, the lecturer finds issue with this claim by contending that recent researchers has observed that if the cages of the tuna farm is moved further offshore, towards deeper in the ocean, the blood fluke infestation has stopped. Therefore, it has also increased the growth of the tuna fishes and reduces the chance to get susceptible to other diseases.
To sum up, the lecturer and the writer hold conflicting views on this.
