Some people believe that in order to thrive, a society must put its own overall success before the well-being of its individual citizens. Others believe that the well-being of a society can only be measured by the general welfare of all its people.
The presence of conflict between the rulers and the people is ubiquitous in any society. Even in meager cses, there lies disparities between the people and the ones at the table. The argument manifested above depicts the ambiguity in people beliefs and standing regarding the priorities of society scenario. It states that some people advocates that society should emphasize society overall success , whereas some believing that general welfare of the people should be given more priority. I moderately agree to the claim of latter’s and I believe this for three reasons.
To begin with, society should be representative of all the members; only such plans and plocies should be brought up which favors all the section of society. some parameters such as view towers and malls could be in the priority of the society, but it should rather focus on other dire needs. The public health status of any society, for instance, could be so disappointing. If the rulers of the society focuses on building other luxury infrastructure, it would incite wrath and rage among the majority of members in the society. Recently in Nepal, many local governments had built statues, towers and other infrastructures which was criticized and disapproved by many. This scenarios urges society of focus on improving general welfare of people.
Furthermore, Society is judged according to the status of general welfare of people; better is the gernal welfare of people , better becomes the society. Affordable health facilities, education, drinking water, electricity are the ones on which the society should direct its focus. The people of society which have excelled on these parameters are happy ; they also have better sense of participation and belonginess to the society. They also would be motivated to contribute to the society and also , ultimately , brings cooperation and harmony in the society. Hence for maintaining harmony in society , it should direct toward improving general welfare of the society.
Having said that, the idea of focusing on only genral welfare of the the people does not seem logical. However, oftentimes the societal goals and action also leads to general welfare of people. The construction of hospitals, schools , hydropower projects are both societal goals and also contribute fro improving gernal welfare of the people.
As far as I can tell, socity should focus on common goals which improves general welfare of the society. The plans and policies of the society shoufl address all the people including minorities, women, disadvantaged and many more ; society sjould judge itself on the basis of the condition of people rather than focusing only few members of societies.
