This is because online materials such as Wikipedia can be edited by any person without any academic qualifications while books and articles are written by qualified authors. My personal experience is a compelling example of this. When I am an undergraduate student, I wrote my semester report based on Wikipedia and I mentioned that as a reference in the reference section. Without reading my report my professor said me that this information may be not accurate and after skimming the report he found that his suggestions are correct. For instance, when I study for my final year exam, I use an online article to find explanations about the Fourier transform. However, reading that article did not help me to understand the concept because steps are not clear.
