Essay topics:

In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization

started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving

resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers

by advertising their products as “ecocertified.” Around the world, many wood companies have

adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive ecocertification. However, it is

unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.

First, American consumers are exposed to so much advertising that they would not value or

even pay attention to the ecocertification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled

“new” or “improved,” American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims in general.

Second, ecocertified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in order to

earn ecocertification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification

agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers. American consumers tend to be

strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood

products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer to keep their prices low rather than

obtain ecocertification.

Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for American

companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this argument is not

convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood companies only if they

marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case—American wood businesses sell

most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied

with the merchandise.

The passage states that american wood companies should not pursue the global trend of ecocertification as it will not be beneficial for them and also gives three reasons for saying this, however the professor explains the obtaining a ecocertification would be beneficial for the companies in the long run and refutes each of the authors claims.

First, the reading claims that american users don't trust advertising much, they are used to companies selling mediocre products under the claims of new or improved, the professor refutes this point by saying that american users have trust in independent certifying agencies rather than companies own certification, the professor explains this by saying that american users will buy products from companies if they are certified by the independent certifying agencies.

Second, the article posits that american consumers are price minded, they will not spend more money in ecocertified wood(which will be expensive than normal wood) they will still prefer to use normal wood. however, the professor says that the price american consumers are price driven but they will still buy ecocertified wood even it is expensive. According to the professor the consumers consider price between 2 products when there is a huge gap betrween the prices if the difference is mere 5% which is in the case of normal wood and ecocertifeid wood, the consumers will buy ecocertified wood, as their values to save the environment also plays an important role in decision making of purchase of wood.

Third, the reading states that as the american companies don't sell their products outside USA they don't need ecocertification , THe professor opposes this point by explaining that when american companies will not pursue certification, the companies which are certified and are based outside USA will get a market to sell their eco products and the american companies will lose their consumers to the other non-american companies, which will be loss for the company.

To sum up professor completely refutes the claims made by the passage and says that american companies should get themself ecocertifeid and gives his reasons for it as explained above.
