TPO 15,Cane toads
The passage is about cane toad amphibians inhabiting in Central and South America. they were transported to australia to help agriculture, but unfortunately affected the Australian ecosystem. The author offers several solutions to control/for controlling/ the population of these animals in australia. yet the speaker is skeptical about these ideas and thinks that they are not efficient enough.
The first solution given by the author is to build a national fence. By this, people will prevent this species to spread in the rest of the country where they have not inhabited yet. However, the professor thinks that the rivers and flowing waters will carry out the toad eggs. thus, these fencies will be inefficient.
The second approach to reduce /method of diminishing / the quantity of this amphibians is human resources. In fact, volunteers can easily capture this animal by simple tools and kill them. Along with this, toads' eggs are very easy to destroy which is also an effective method to decrease their population. In contrast, the speaker thinks that volunteers are an uncontrolled power, and that process can cause other bad effects. For example, they can catch other amphibians as well which are really important for the country nature.
The final strategy of the control over the toad population is related to a disease-causing virus. The scholars are involved in research where they are trying to develop a virus which will infect this species and have a minimal effect on the others. The author thinks that it is a good way to fight against these animals. Nonetheless, the professor totally refutes this method because they can affect american frogs as well. it is known that these amphibians are being transferred by the animal lovers, and it is highly probable that the transferred ones will infect the american population of animals. thus, these viruses are dangerous for the american population as well.
In conclusion, it has to be noted that /it is evident that/ there is a contradiction between the ideas presented by the author and the speaker. The author lists several solutions and believes that they are efficient. On the other hand, the professor has a different opinion about these ideas and casts doubt on their success.
