Tpo 55 -Question : Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific concerns presented in the reading passage.

The lecture and the reading are both about the prevention of desertification by using a box shape device, which would help trees in growth process. The writer suggests that there are three reasons why scientists think that this device is not going to be successful. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading. She thinks that those arguments are not convincing.

First and foremost, the professor explains that the cost of one device would be reasonable after we divide the number of trees that were grown by this device, with the number of the reused devices. This argument opposes the reading, which states that one device is very expensive; therefore, growing millions of trees would require a meaningful effort to fight desertification.

Secondly, the lecturer points out that people, who will volunteer to install these devices, could benefit from them. She argues that the box shape device can collect water, which could be used for other purposes such as to grow other plants rather than trees. Also, the waste of trees could be used as fire wood. Nevertheless, this contradicts reading, which claims that asking local people to install and maintain the devices is going to be difficult. If people are not convinced that they will benefit from this action, they would not get easily motivated.

Finally, the lecturer disagree with reading's suggestion that the device is not able to collect enough water for big trees; therefore, the possibility for a big tree to die after a period of time without rain would be high. The teacher opposes this view by mentioning that the device would help the young tree to grow its roots underground, as a result, the tree would not need the device anymore once the long roots reach the ground water.
