The author states that the level of salt in the lake's water has been increasingly steadily and if it continues, the lake's water will not be able to support living populations. He provides three suggestions to solve it. The professor in the lecture, however, finds the reasons dubious and impractical and refutes them all in details.

Firstly, the reading passage suggests removing salt from the lake's water directly with special desalination. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that this action would result in more harmful situation. He says that pumping the water back into the lake would be harmful according to this fact that it may contain other types of chemical such as selenium. Such chemicals are toxic and will brings health problem to people who breathe it.

Furthermore, the author claims that diluting the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean through canals and pipelines will be practical. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture states that constructing the pipelines and canals require great financial resource and the local government is unable to give it. Also, the ocean is roughly 100 kilometers away from the lake's water; as a result, constructing canals and pipelines would be more expensive.

Finally, the reading recommends that salitation could be control by building walls and divide the lake into several sections with different salinity. Conversely, the speaker holds this view that this solution does not last for long term due to this fact that some geological events such as earthquakes could intense it. For instance, the constructed walls will collapse at the first time after a severe earthquake happen. Thus, by falling down the walls the high and low salinity water mix together.
