Understanding the past is of little use to those in current positions of leadership.

"Those who don't know history are condemned to repeat it" is a very powerful quote that explains to us the importance of past actions and their repercussions. The author of the prompt makes an assertion that past events are of very little use to people in leadership positions which I strongly disagree with. The reasons for this stance are explained in detail in the following paragraphs.

For business leaders knowing how the actions and decisions made by their predecessors affected the business is very helpful because it tells them pitfalls and potential roadblocks that they might encounter. For instance, when Ratan Tata, the chairman of the Tata group decided to invest in airline business he had the good fortune of having his predecessor JRD Tata's mistakes in the aviation field which he avoided and thus made TataSIA airlines a profitable venture. This also shows Ratan Tata's business acumen, cause he didn't rely heavily upon the past decision cause he understood that circumstances and facts have changed. So basically he took the past failures empirically and modified the lessons that they had learned from past failures and applied to the current scenario and managed to emerge profitable in the highly difficult airline business.

For political leaders, this means implementing schemes with a high rate of efficiency like the MGNRES(Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme) which was started in the early 2000s by the then government of AB Vajpayee and continued by the current Indian government under Narendra Modi. The current government has modified this employment scheme and made it more efficient after understanding the effects and the repercussions of it. They have, as well, made changes to it cause the circumstances from the early 2000s have changed and will further use it for the benefit of the people.

In science, we had Thomas Alva Edison fail a thousand times while making a light bulb after which he is quoted to have famously said,"I have not failed but I have understood how not to make a light bulb". From his previous failures, Edison understood better about making a light bulb and was finally successful in making a long lasting commercial one.

From the examples given in the above essay, we can say with confidence that past experiences help us in making better decisions if we understand the facts and circumstances under which those decisions were taken and the repercussions they had. They are sort of guiding light that helps us in making better decisions and further in accurately visualizing the consequences of our future decisions. Hence, their importance cannot be neglected.
