TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task

The passage concerns the technics that the whales employ to navigate. It proposes that the whales navigate their way by stars, like early human sailors. On the other hand, the professor states that this hypothesize seems fascinating but the reasons are not convincing enough. In what follows, the reasons for disagreement of professor will be explained.

First of all, the passage asserted that the whales enjoy a powerful brain that able them to navigate their way through the stars. On the other hand, the professor gave an example of ducks that do not possess such a complex brain but they can navigate their way by stars. He said that these features may be an instinctive feature.

Second, the passage believes that animals maintain their movement in a straight direction for a long distance by helping of an external force that they sense, so for the whales that can rely on a specific external force, the stars are the external force that may help them to maintain their movement. On the other hand, the professor believes that the whales utilize this ability too. He stipulates that there is an organ in the brain of whales that senses the magnetic field and they maintain their movement through sensing the magnetic field.

Third, the spy-hopping behavior of whales is known as a reason for their navigation through stars by the passage. On the contrary, the professor is of the opinion that it is not a unique feature in the whales. He stated that the sharks also develope this features. The sharks are one of those animals that do not migrate and they use this behavior to detect the possible preys, so it does not necessarily mean that the whales use this behavior to see the stars in order to navigate their way.

In a nutshell, the professor believes that this theory is a pure speculation that needs more investigation and more convincing reasons.
